Think about how exciting it is to redesign your home. Now, think about that feeling if you’ve lived there 20+ years without doing much to it for that duration. That was the case for Ruth, the lovely homeowner whose home project we’re delighted to share! After decades in her home, she came to The Black Goose Design, ready to make some significant changes to her main living area and dining room. Of course, when you live somewhere for decades, there are memories made, keepsakes collected, and favorite furniture pieces acquired, so this wasn’t a complete remodel. Instead, it was a substantial redesign with remodeling worked in. The outcome is serene and beautiful – a place that still feels like home, even with a major update. Let’s take a look at this cozy-meets-current outcome.

You know a project is going to be good when it starts with an inspo-stroll. Ruth joined Monica, one of our senior designers at the time, for a walk around our showroom. The time together gave Monica a better understanding of Ruth’s style and vision, and it gave Ruth the chance to see put-together spaces vs. just reviewing swatches and images online. Plus, who doesn’t love a little window shopping?! In this one visit, the color palette for the redesign was determined, setting the project in motion!
The treasure that inspired it all? The beautiful bird pillows seen in this photo.

Pulling from the colors of this pillow, custom Schumacher fabric was ordered. This is a high-end brand, but by ordering it in smaller doses throughout the space, you elevate the area without breaking the bank.
Ruth loves to read, so a custom reading nook was a must! A window bench was added, as well as built-in bookshelves, creating a cozy book nook.
On any project like this, it’s so important to understand the homeowner’s goals for the use of the space. In this instance, the dining room needed to be an open and inviting space for Ruth’s family to gather.

By incorporating sentimental art, including gorgeous photography taken by Ruth’s daughter, as well as cherished pieces like this buffet that Ruth knew she didn’t want to part with, the dining space feels like home. The great thing about working with a designer on something like this are the doors it opens to custom work. We were able to order the dining table in a stain/finish that complements the beautiful buffet. (Fun fact: She bought it at The Black Goose Design years ago, so this is like a full-circle moment in a way!)

Art from vacations the family has taken still line the walls in this redesign, but they’ve been paired with a new assortment of accents. It was also meant to be when the same vacay pieces worked so well with the Schumacher fabric.

Finally, extending the wood flooring throughout the living and dining area not only updates the home, it subconsciously makes the space feel larger. As does the fresh coat of paint, updated draperies, and other touches added.
This project took 8-10 months from that very first shopping trip to the final reveal. In less than a year, the house leaped forward by decades, without losing the special touches that make it “home.” We’ll leave you with a few before/after shots to illustrate some of that journey. If you have a project you’ve been wanting to do, stop by. We want to help!
