Oh, what a difference a remodel can make! This dining room had remained untouched since the homeowners moved in. In just 6-8 months, that all changed. Let’s look at the big reveal of the Draper View Project, including before and after photos, and uncover a few takeaways to consider as you approach your next remodel!

FIND YOUR INSPO
Early in the consultation process, Monica, the senior designer who worked on this project, knew the homeowner was in love with a few key pieces – the rug, the wallpaper, and the chandelier. From there, the rest of the room took shape. It’s always a good idea to build from a piece you already own and love or something new that calls to you. Start from your heart!

As far as colors to use, it all stemmed from the kidney pillows (14” x 22”) adorning the host chairs. Pillows are a prime source of pallet inspiration if you ever find yourself feeling stuck in the color department.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Remodels often occur in lived-in homes. If you’re about to embark on a project, the best thing to remember is there will be a messy stage. The messy middle, as Monica calls it. If you plan your details out ahead of the work getting underway, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect and be less apt to change course mid project. This is where it’s often super helpful to work with a designer to determine those details, create renderings, and more. After all, who wants to stay in the messy middle any longer than necessary. Of course, all work involved pays off big in the end, making every aspect of the journey time well spent!
CAPTURE COLOR CUES
Painting the room this rich shade really adds drama and an obvious wow factor. By painting the walls, the trim, and the ceiling – a technique known as color drenching – the room feels bigger and a greater impact is made. The colors are complementary, which is just right for these residents. No Analogous here! Consider what aspects of the color wheel evoke the best reactions from you and look for inspo items that capture those combinations.

Fun Fact: The room already had a chic tray ceiling. Sometimes nothing more than a fresh coat of paint can make an existing feature shine as it was always meant to.
BRACE FOR IMPACT
As much as the homeowner loved the wallpaper (and what’s not to love?!), we opted against papering the entire room or even an entire wall. Too much of a good thing can be just that … too much! Instead, molding was added to create panels , which were the perfect place to frame pops of wallpaper pattern.

CONSIDER THE USE
This isn’t one of those pretty-to-look-at-only dining rooms. This family uses the space often. Knowing that, we opted for high-end, comfortable dining chairs, customized with performance fabric. If you know you’re working in a high traffic area, the added investment of higher-end items is a good idea.
Fun Fact: The wallpaper inspired the striking upholstery choice.
BLEND BEAUTIFULLY
As mentioned, the homeowner fell in love with the chandelier, which is a more modern look. She was also quite taken with the striking wallpaper, which is more old world in design. Modern meets old world?! You betcha! The chandeliers clean lines enhance the wallpaper’s sophistication, creating a design style known as rustic elegance – a look that’s both current and classic! If the idea of blending styles feels intimidating, stop by The Black Goose Design. We’d love to explore options with you and see what kind of magic we can create.
STORE STRATEGICALLY
This room has two different storage options, providing room to both add decorative touches AND incorporate effective storage. The sideboard houses the practical dining room essentials (dishes, table runners, holiday items, etc.), while the display cabinet houses the sentimental touches. If space allows, having designated fixtures is a great way to keep things organized without sacrificing those all-important personal touches.

There’s a common misconception that you need to commit to remodeling an entire home at once, but that simply isn’t the case. When you partner with a designer who can factor in the overall design and architecture, updating even one room will do wonders to elevate the entire home.
We'll leave you with a couple more 'before' shots, because they're just so satisfying!
