Modern Design for Downtown Living
Thursday Jun 12 2025

Downtown living is vibrant and exciting. The clients who call this modern Salt Lake condo home recently relocated from Southern Utah and wanted their new residence to reflect the beauty of their new city surroundings and also refelect their clean, modern, artful taste. That’s where senior designer Del Reanne Lucas Wilson lent her expertise. Together, they transformed what was once a dark and dated condo into an elegant and dramatic place to call home.

GLASS ADDS CLASS

The homeowners have a gorgeous assortment of blown glass art pieces, which set the tone in this home. Like the glass, the decorative pillows add pops of primary color. Custom shelving was designed and built to display their vibrant glass art collection.

Design Tip: Another way to showcase a favorite art piece is to place it on a stack of books. The creative base will give the item some lift and interest without upstaging it as a focal point.

DESIGNING ON A CURVE

Upon entering this chic space, it’s impossible not to be taken in by the floor-to-ceiling windows. They follow the same structural curve of the building, giving the entire home its design direction. You’ll notice soft lines throughout, including curved furniture, soft patterns, and even custom carpet, which was cut to fit into a rug matching the unique shape of the room. This makes the space feel much larger than it actually is!

Take a look at this before shot, which shows how challenging it can be to position rugs in a curved area. Swapping out the two rugs with custom carpeting makes such a difference!

Design Tip: Using curves in a smaller space like this actually creates more visual space for the eye.

RESTFUL RETREAT

Hello, elegance! This peaceful bedroom is the perfect spot to unwind! Every item in here was strategically selected. Again, curves were used to help keep a low profile and create more visual space for the eye. Going with a soft, neutral, monochromatic color scheme adds to the overall oasis that is this quiet, calm bedroom retreat.

Design Tip: Don’t overlook the outdoors. The urban view from this bedroom window was factored in when designing this space, and the outcome is harmonious. Take note of the view from your window. If your outdoor setting clashes with the design choices made within, you’ll risk exhausting the eye.

PATTERN PLAY

The homeowners love color, and the powder room proved the perfect location to add some energizing hues! The brilliant floral wallpaper extends beyond the walls to the ceiling, creating heightened drama. The pattern envelopes you in a mood to remember! The metal detailing, including the sophisticated feather pattern on the sconce and the hammered metal knobs, provide attractive finishing touches.

Are you sitting down? Here's a look at what this room looked like before.

Design Tip: When extending wallpaper to the ceiling, pattern matching is key. With a pattern like this, you want the transition to be seamless. You also want to accentuate the beauty and make the rest disappear. With that in mind, the overhead bathroom vent was painted a dark color to blend in with the background.

KITCHEN ON THE QUICK

A complete kitchen remodel can be a time-consuming, invasive endeavor—not ideal for a lived-in space in need of work. Fortunately, there are options that can expedite the process without sacrificing style! With little more than cabinet refacing and a stone veneer placed over the previous granite slab, this dark mahogany kitchen was transformed in just two days! Can you believe that?

Design Tip: Don’t shy away from mixing metals. The hammered gold wrapped around the glass pendants and the gold faucet both blend beautifully with the stainless steel of the appliances and stools. A designer can help you strike the right balance if mixing metals feels overwhelming.

There you have it—a modern, curvaceous, high-contrast home, just right for city living! Of course, this clean design aesthetic can work no matter where you reside, and our team at The Black Goose Design would love to help you make it happen!
