Why is it designing our own bedrooms tends to be the last thing on the remodel list? This is where so much of time at home is spent, making it one of the most important rooms under your roof. Today, let’s shift those priorities and put the focus on your R&R with a Bedroom Design Q&A. Here are questions we’re frequently asked about bedroom design:

Q. What colors should I use when decorating my bedroom?
A. As with many design questions, there is no right or wrong answer here. That being said, we do have our favorites. Typically, when clients design their bedroom, they want a peaceful, calming space that helps them wind down at the end of the day. For some, that comes with the use of dark, moody colors. For others, fresh crisp whites do the trick. We love using calming colors to achieve this goal, including neutrals, various shades of blue and green, and other earth tones.
Q. What type of lighting should I use in my bedroom?
A. Lighting is both practical and a wonderful way to add personality to your space. Don’t limit your bedroom lighting to can lights. Add a fun main light fixture to the mix. We also suggest a lamp on each side of the bed. Pendants on either side of the bed are another stylish option. The main goal here is to have some kind of lighting that you can turn off from bed, so you don’t have to walk across the room when the need to sleep hits. Depending on the size of your room, lamps on a dresser or sideboard are great too. The use of accent lighting is a great way to help you create calm at the end of a busy day. Main bedroom lighting is typically bright, making accent lighting the ideal choice at night. The darker look of your room will help your body naturally start to prepare for sleep.

Q. How do I make my bedroom feel cozier?
A. Texture is key! And we aren’t just talking bedding here. This also includes rugs and draperies. We are big fans of adding a rug beneath a bed. This goes double if you have hardwood floors. Of course, you can also layer rugs on carpet. In large bedrooms this can help create a defined area and break up open space. For added comfort, don’t forget the walls. Both wallpaper and draperies will warm up any bedroom. For the actual bed, we never stop at just one layer. Adding a second layer across the end of the bed makes a big difference in the cozy department. One of our go-to options is a fluffy duvet, which you can fold along the foot of the bed. Of course, quilts and throws also do the trick.

Q. I have room for a dresser but don't need one. Do I need to add this bedroom basic to my space?
A. If you have room for a large piece of furniture, yes, put something there. Does it have to be a dresser? No. You can place a console or sideboard in a bedroom or create a seating area in the open space. A settee, sofa, or pair of chairs can introduce another element of texture, as well as more opportunity for color and pattern play. More than anything, you’ll want to avoid large blank walls in a bedroom. They’re the opposite of inviting and can make a room feel cold. If you can't fit a piece of furniture, opt for a large piece of art or a mirror. Or, if you're super lucky, a floor-to-ceiling window is another stunning option!

Q. Does my primary bedroom need to match my primary bathroom?
A. Great question! “Match” isn't the word we’d use, but these two spaces should feel cohesive. For example, if you have sky blue in your bedroom and want to incorporate pink in your bathroom, find a piece that will tie the two colors together, such as a rug or a piece of art. This will help the two areas flow and feel connected. If you have green tile in your bathroom but don't want a green bedroom, look for one element that uses the green while also introducing a second color. By coordinating the two rooms, you’ll keep them from feeling like two separate spaces.
Q. Do I need to match all my furniture pieces or mix and match every piece?
A. Can some pieces match? Yes! Do we want everything feeling matchy-matchy? No. When you walk into a room, it’s nice to give your eye variety. There’s no excitement to the eye in looking at the same brown nightstand, bed, and dresser. Even swapping out the bed for something upholstered or an iron frame will break up the set. Matching nightstands are a popular furniture choice that will give your bedroom a symmetrical feel. If you are bold enough to mix and match nightstands, we suggest doing them the same height. When you mix and match pieces, throwing in a new material can help you blend everything together. After all, trying to match three of four different wood stains is rough. Adding fabric or metal can really help mix things, as can painted wood.
