Fall Designer Bed Checklist
Thursday Oct 9 2025

As the temps drop, now’s a fine time to start adding gorgeous layers to your bedding. Not only will it help keep you cozy, it will elevate your bed’s look and feel. Here are our favorite tips at The Black Goose Design to make your fall bed look designer:

1.  Love the Layers!

It doesn't matter how big your bed is, you need layers!

  • Layer 1: Mattress Cover

If you have a bed frame that shows your box spring, consider a larger layer, a dust ruffle, or, one of our go-to tips, a fitted sheet for your box spring.

  • Layer 2: Foot-of-the-Bed Fold

The goal here is to break up the bottom layer of your bed and add some loftiness. Duvets are our favorite choice, but you can achieve the look with a thick quilt or comforter, too.

TIP: If it’s just for show, you can simply place the 2nd layer, folded at the foot of the bed. We love usable bedding, though, so if you think you’ll pull the 2nd layer up at night, here are two fun folds to try:

Fold 1: Place the second layer directly over the first layer and then just fold it back to the end of the bed. This allows lots of space to layer a textured throw (spoiler alert—this is number 3 on our list!).

Fold 2: Place the second layer over the first and fold it down to the end of the bed, just as we did in Option 1. Rather than leave it at that, bring the corner of the second layer back up to the fold line. This creates a little more loftiness since this area will now be three layers thick, adding that much more visual interest.

2.  Down With the Inserts!

If you aren’t allergic, please opt for down inserts. Yes, there is a big difference, both visually and in use.

Let’s look at a few of the many reasons why this is a designer-bed must:

  • Down pillows sit much better than a poly-filled alternative.
  • Hello, comfy! Down is very comfortable to lean against when reading a book or watching TV in bed.
  • Down regains its shape with ease. A simple fluff up should do the trick. Poly inserts, on the other hand, can break and look misshapen over time.
  • When it comes to quality sleep, down is also the best option. It’s natural material, so it can regulate temperature and will even wick away moisture.
  • Down is made to last! If you invest in a nice down comforter, you can have it for 10-20 years.
  • Perfect for the months ahead, down is the best option for adding warmth. Bring on the fall cuddles!

3.  Throw on Texture

This one sounds so simple, but adding a throw makes such a difference. Beds need visual interest, and each bed is different. Throws are versatile and there are numerous amazing options. You’ll want to pick a throw that gives your bed the finishing touch it needs. Perhaps that’s a pop of color. Or maybe you need to mix up the finishes and fabric. Would something dark or light be the better complement? Adding a throw to the foot of your bed is that perfect way to add this finishing touch.

4.  In Your Dark Era

Maybe your bed is already set up in fall colors. That's great! If not, add something that will make it feel more in touch with the season. An all-white bed, for example, would be stunning with a dark velvet throw pillow and a dark textured throw—two simple things that will change the overall look of your bed in an instant.

If your bedding is multicolored, pick one of the fall colors in the design and use it as your accent color. If you have a green, rust, orange, red, or brown color, play off of that. Is all your bedding bright? Sometimes you can pick a color in the bedding and accent using a darker shade of that same color to create richness.

There you have it, our four favorite ways to make a designer bed this fall. Of course, this autumnal option works all year long! Simply apply the same principles and select lighter choices.
